A Ferrari-owner in Bengaluru, who had been evading taxes, was forced to pay Rs 1.42 crore recently after Regional Transport Office (RTO) officials caught the car being driven on the streets of the city.
The red Ferrari SF90 Stradale, which has a base ex-showroom price of Rs 7.5 crore, was located by RTO officials on Thursday morning, following which officials verified its tax status.
Upon finding that road tax had not been paid for the car, which is registered in Maharashtra, RTO officials seized the vehicle and issued a notice to the owner, giving him time till the evening to make the payment.
The owner was also warned of legal consequences in case of non-compliance and failure to pay the amount demand.
With his car under RTO custody, the owner acted swiftly, and cleared his entire dues: a whopping Rs 1,41,59,041, nearly one fifth of the price of the supercar.
NDTV, citing RTO officials, reported that this collection was one of the largest-ever single-vehicle tax recoveries in the city.
The publication also reported that RTO officials will continue to crackdown on luxury vehicles operating in Bengaluru without valid tax payments.
Earlier this year, the transport department had seized 30 luxury cars, including Ferraris, Porsches, and Aston Martins, among others, for tax evasion.
