A Kannada film director was arrested in a cheque bounce case on Monday. The police arrested Rishi, alias Nagaraj, based on the directions of a local court as he failed to appear before it despite several notices.

Rishi hogged the limelight in September 2014 after he moved the VIII Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) court claiming that he had married Maitreya Gowda, a small-time actress. Maitreya Gowda was in the news after claiming that Union Minister D V Sadananda Gowda’s son Karthik Gowda had secretely married her in Mangaluru.

Rishi had claimed that he had married her on July 17, 2004 at Sanman Hotel and stayed there for four months. He had alleged that the relationship ended abruptly when she fled with Rs 2 lakh belonging to him.

Rishi had directed a movie titled “One-way”. He had taken Rs 6.10 lakh from Deepak promising him the hero’s role. However, the shooting was halted after some time.

“As Deepak demanded the money back, Rishi gave Deepak a cheque for Rs 6.10 lakh. Deepak presented the cheque at his bank, it was returned due to insufficient funds. He filed a private complaint with the 15th ACCM court against Rishi under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 (dishonour of cheque for insufficiency, etc., of funds in the account).

The court directed the Vyalikaval police to arrest and produce him before the court as he failed to appear  despite notices,” Sridhar K Pujar, the police inspector, told DH. The court remanded Rishi in judicial custody. Ge gad moved out of Vyalikaval a few months ago.
