This Republic Day, the flower show at Lalbagh Botanical Garden will feature a millet statue of Mahatma Gandhi to mark the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation.
The show will open on Thursday and go on until January 27. The Horticulture Department will spend Rs 1.9 crore on the show and expects more than six lakh visitors, Y S Patil, Director, Horticulture Department, told reporters on Wednesday.
While there will be millet statues of Gandhi and his grandson behind the Glass House, another statue will depict Gandhi meditating inside Lalbagh’s main attraction.
As many as 6.40 lakh flowers will be used to replicate the statue of Gandhi at the Sabarmati Ashram. On the left will be a replica of the Rajghat, the Gandhi memorial in New Delhi. There will also be a three-phase statue of Gandhi, measuring 3.5 feet and made from plaster of Paris.
Another attraction will be Gandhi’s Three Monkeys (representing the principle ‘speak no evil, hear no evil and see no evil’). On the left side of the Glass House will be a replica of Gandhi’s ashram in Sevagram, Wardha, Patil added.
This apart, flowers will be used to create a replica of the peacock, India’s national bird, around the Glass House. Stalls of medicinal, ornamental and Bonsai plants will also be set up.
