The state government has sanctioned five acres of land to the traffic department to put away impounded vehicles, ending the practice of dumping the seized vehicles along footpaths and narrow lanes.
Ridding two- and four-wheelers seized for violations has become arduous for the traffic police. Without dumping yards, they allow vehicles, left unclaimed by the owners and those caught in accidents, to pile before the police stations and at street corners. Recently, the traffic police made a powerpoint presentation before the chief secretary, stressing the need for dump yards to free the public space occupied by the impounded vehicles.
Speaking to DH, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) P Harishekaran said: “After the request, the state government has allotted five acres of land in the city.”
He said the city has nearly 5,000 unclaimed vehicles, including those from the law and order department. “We have shortage of space to park them and so they are left near the police stations. Following orders from the chief secretary of Karnataka, T M Vijay Bhaskar, the land has been allocated,” Harishekaran said.
The district administration has allotted three acres in south taluk and two in north taluk. “Another 13 acres will be allocated to the traffic police department any moment by the Deputy Commissioner of Bengaluru,” Harishekaran said.
With space to dump the unclaimed vehicles, the traffic police hope that the troubles caused by seized vehicles will be over in six months.
