Bengaluru: The state government has constituted a new disaster management authority under the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
It will have seven members and will be headed by the BBMP chief commissioner. Other members include the deputy commissioner of Bengaluru Urban district, police commissioner, chairman of the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), and chief fire officer.
Its responsibilities include preparing a disaster management plan, identifying disaster-prone areas, taking preventive measures, and involving non-governmental organisations and voluntary groups in disaster management efforts.
The government has also directed the BBMP to prepare the plan in consultation with local authorities. It must cover vulnerable areas, measures implemented, and response plans. The plan must be updated every two years.
