Of the remaining 400 MLD, nearly 35 percent is lost in leakages which are considered as unaccounted for water (UFW) and 10 percent to unauthorised connections, which is non-revenue water (NRW).
There is nearly a five percent loss of revenue due to old water meters; 12-15 per cent of water is supplied through public taps; 8-10 per cent are unauthorised connections; 3-5 per cent leakage at ground level reservoirs (GLRs), 12-15 percent leakage at networks;10-15 percent leakage in household connections. Three percent of water is being supplied to all the BWSSB offices in the City and water tankers.
T Venkataraju, BWSSB’s engineer-in-chief, says there are many connections in the City which can be regularised and from which the Board can generate revenue.
Although the Board has already identified these connections, it is yet to regularise them.
“There are nearly three lakh water meters which needs to be replaced in the City. Every year, BWSSB takes up projects where pipelines are changed for at least 100 km. Another reason for leakage is due to the use of GI pipes which get corroded after 10-15 years, we are in the process of replacing these pipes with MDPE pipelines (Medium Density Polyethylene) with casing in phase wise,” he added.
Water pumped from TK Halli, 100 km from the City gets distributed from 52 ground level reservoirs.
