The BBMP on Monday informed the high court of the steps being taken to instal smart bins for collecting segregated waste in the city.
A division bench comprising Justices B S Patil and B V Nagarathna was hearing a batch of public interest petitions, seeking directions to the Palike for the proper management of solid waste.
Sarfaraz Khan, joint commissioner (health and solid waste management) BBMP, stated that the process of installing such bins, with a capacity of collecting 1.5 tonnes of solid waste, is under way.
The court asked the BBMP to expedite this process and ensure that at least 100 such bins are installed by the next date of hearing.
In response, Khan stated that he would file an affidavit, listing the action taken and the future plan within one month. The court has granted Khan two weeks to submit the report.
Khan elaborated that 2,000 bins have already been installed in the city, of which, about 500 have been either damaged or stolen. He said that action has been initiated against the culprits. To this, the court asked Khan to install 2,000 more bins in different commercial areas once they are identified by the corporation.
Encouraging the Palike to use advanced technology and other indigenous methods to curb odour and health hazards from the Karnataka Compost Development Corporation (KCDC) plant, the court has sought a status report from the civic body on the issue. Moreover, the court has directed the managing director of KCDC to file a separate status report in this regard.
The matter was adjourned to June 29.
