A group where elderly women can discuss everything under the sun, learn Kannada and computer skills, visit new places, and make new friends — is holding a walkathon for International Women’s Day on Saturday.
The WhatsApp group, called Super Seenagers, was formed by Indira Prabhakar Reddy on March 31 last year, along with 20 other core members. “Our first event was attended by a lot of single women. Many shared their life stories with each other,” recollects the 72-year-old. The group went on to organise day-long trips and international getaways.
They’ve visited places like Mandaragiri, Markonahalli Dam, Devarayanadurga, and even international destinations like New Zealand. Indira, a retired banking professional, who has travelled to around 35 countries and across India, feels the group has “helped many elderly women experience new things”.
Fifty seven-year-old Jyothi Ahuja, a core member, says the group has helped many like her meet like-minded people. “Often, we don’t share all our thoughts or personal stories, with our family or colleagues. However, when we meet people from our own age, it is easy to share stories with them,” says the former manager at an MNC.
The Super Seenager group has a core WhatsApp group, which shares details of upcoming events, and multiple subsidiary groups to wish each other on birthdays, discuss crafts or other hobbies, share jokes, and create travel plans, shares Jyothi, an RR Nagar resident.
Vidyaranyapura resident Lathaa RK, an avid traveller, is visiting Nepal next month with the group. “Many who like travelling but haven’t been able to in the past, have visited new places through the group. We also invite our partners to join us on long trips,” she adds.
The group has around 300 members, and all members are above 50 years of age.
