A 22-year-old history-sheeter was hacked to death by members of a rival gang near Baba Lane on Mysuru Road under the Chamarajpet police station limits on Wednesday night.

Sanjay Kumar, a resident of Giripuram in Mysuru Road, was a history-sheeter with the Chamarajpet police and was wanted in many cases. He was assaulted by members of a rival gang, headed by Dilip alias Pattabhi, also a history-sheeter.

The incident occurred at around 8.30 pm on Wednesday when Kumar was walking back home. An eight-member gang, led by Dilip, came by autorickshaws and attacked him with lethal weapons before fleeing the spot.

The public alerted the police, who went to the spot and shifted Kumar to Victoria Hospital. Kumar failed to respond to treatment and succumbed to injuries later in the night.

The police said that Kumar and Dilip have been rivals for  a long time. Dilip wanted to take revenge on Kumar and was plotting to murder him.

In January, 2015, Kumar was arrested but came out on bail a few months ago. He was also booked under the Goonda Act.
A case has been registered.
