Bengaluru: Bengaluru police on Saturday announced the arrest of a 43-year-old woman for allegedly stealing Rs 67 lakh in cash and valuables worth a whopping Rs 70 lakh from her employer’s house in west Bengaluru’s Chamarajpet.
The suspect has been identified as Uma alias Salma, a native of Chamarajanagar. She has been booked under the BNS Section 306, which deals with theft by a clerk or servant of property in possession of the master.
On June 9, Radha, a 72-year-old woman, filed a complaint at the Chamarajpet police station alleging that Uma had stolen cash and valuables kept in the house of her bedridden sister, identified as Sujatha.
According to Radha, her sister Sujatha has been on bed rest for the last three months, so they hired Uma as house help about two months ago. Meanwhile, Sujatha’s family sold a property near Electronics City and kept the income in cash at their home.
Police said that Uma knew about the development and learnt that the cash was kept in the locker at Sujatha’s house. Last month, Uma saw an opportunity when fewer people were at the house and took away valuables with her.
The incident came to light when Sujatha’s family decided to buy a flat in Chamarajpet and opened the locker. When asked, Uma feigned innocence, and eventually the family filed a police complaint against Uma.
During police interrogation, Uma reportedly confessed to the crime and surrendered Rs 57 lakh in cash and valuables worth Rs 70 lakh.
