A housekeeper was arrested for allegedly stealing jewellery from the quarters of a scientist inside the Indian Institute of Science campus. The suspect was identified as Mahesh, 18.
According to Sadashivanagar police, Mahesh stole ornaments from the quarters of Dr Vidya on the night of November 7. The police arrested him on Tuesday and recovered the stolen ornaments.
“We received a complaint that there was a theft at the quarters of a scientist. We took the case seriously as IISc comes under a high security zone and nobody could enter so easily,” DCP (Central) Sandeep Patil told Deccan Herald.
“We visited the spot and inspected. There was no forceful entry. Neither windows nor doors were broken. We realised that the offender was very much an insider,“ Patil added. The police immediately questioned every guard and housekeeper staff. During questioning, the police noticed that Mahesh’s attitude was not natural. They grilled him thoroughly and he confessed to the crime.
A native of Tadasighatta near Thyamagondlu, Mahesh had joined the IISc just two months ago. He had not pledged the ornaments, but had kept them in his room. He was produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody, police said.
