Bengaluru: This year's Independence Day flower show at Lalbagh will honour Karnataka’s celebrated freedom fighters Kittur Rani Chennamma and Sangolli Rayanna.

Chennamma, the queen of Kittur, and her army chief Sangolli Rayanna fought against the British rule in the 1820s. The flower show will depict their fight through floral arrangements.

This will be the 218th flower show at the iconic green space. It is expected to begin on August 7 and conclude on August 17.

M Jagadeesh, Joint Director, Lalbagh Botanical Garden, said that preparations for the annual event had begun, and experts, researchers and scholars were working to determine the aspects of Rani Chennamma and Sangolli Rayanna's life to be projected at the flower show.

"We are holding a series of meetings with experts to determine the different aspects to be covered. We are also speaking to artists to chalk out different floral arrangements that can be made, how the concepts can be designed, and how the 3D models can be planned," he told DH

Preparations for the show began nearly three months ago and the department is already growing nearly six lakh plants.

"We have also written to many nurseries to send over flowers. We are expecting flowers from Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. There are special flowers we have asked for from Nandi Hills and Ooty,” Jagadeesh added.

Officials expect a footfall of 11 lakh for the event.
