He’s a dancer, gymnast and a film student. He made his grand Bollywood debut with ‘Machine’, directed by Abbas-Mastan. Soon, Eshan Shanker hopes to be the name that echoes in Bollywood.

He has past associations with Dharma Productions which allowed him to be an assistant for two films. Just a film old, Eshan is working rigorously to keep up his celebrity status.

He took some time off between his dance and gymnastic training to chat with Anila Kurian about his journey so far.

‘Machine’ was your debut film, how was the experience?

I haven’t tasted stardom yet but this has definitely opened many doors for me. Since I have Abbas-Mastan’s name attached to my work now, I’ve been getting calls from directors and producers. I hope to work on my next project soon.

You played a double role in the film...

I play a boy-next-door and a commando. The physical appearances for both are very different. But the rehearsals helped when we finally started shooting.

You went through a lot of physical training for ‘Machine’. Did you ever feel like giving up?

It’ll be a lie if I say no, but I had to pick up my strength and continue doing it. That’s what I am here for anyway.

It’s an Abbas-Mustan film, not everyone gets that opportunity. So I couldn’t give up.

It’s not your first step into Bollywood though. You’ve assisted directors in movies before this...

I assisted the directors of ‘Gippi’ and ‘2 States’. That has helped me in learning certain techniques. I don’t have a film background, so this was a stepping stone to where I am now.

Your dad always wanted you to be an actor. What did you want to become?

To be honest, ever since I was seven or eight, I decided that I wanted to become an actor since my dad couldn‘t.

So this came to me very naturally and I was always inclined to becoming an actor.

You are known to be quite fashionable too. What’s your fashion mantra?

It has to be
cool and trendy. But be yourself because that reflects in what you wear too.

Where do you see yourself five years from now?

I want to be seen doing bigger films and my acting would have improved by then. I want to get better at my dancing and be more flexible.

I will also be a lot more mature to understand the situations around me. Whether the process along the way will be a success or failure, only the future will tell.
