Young speed lovers and racing enthusiasts got a chance to exhibit their motoring skills at the 12th edition of Maruti Suzuki Autocross that saw participation of about as many as 140 drivers, including women, competing in 11 different categories.

Held at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida last weekend, the three-day event aimed at giving the participants a secured environment to showcase their motoring skills with controlled turns and twists. The challenge was to finish the lap of 2.4 kms in the shortest possible time. The final round on Sunday saw 56 drivers compete across various amateur and professional categories.

Of the total participants, 20 per cent were women and 40 per cent were taking part in a racing event for the first time. Anshika Kwatra, a 20-year-old MBBS student, participated in four categories – three for ladies and one for all. She won all in two ladies’ categories competition and stood second in rest two, losing by a whisker.
“I started participating in the car racing events since last year only but I learnt driving when I was in Std VI.

I developed an interest in motor racing as my father has been racing for many years. In one of the categories, my I was competing with my father and I came second in that. He has always supported me. My mother too is never afraid for me because she has confidence in me,” she shared with Metrolife.

Sarika Sehrawat, a 30-year-old businesswoman, won in the open category, has been participating in car racing rallies since last one decade. “I participate in car rallies very often not just those that happen in Delhi but across the country. This time I wasn’t prepared well so I took part in only one category for women and I won it,” said Sarika, who runs an automobile workshop in Gurgaon.

“My husband was there to support me. My father-in-law, who has been a vintage car racer, supports me too. I didn’t know if I would be able to carry foward my passion for racing after marriage but my in-laws always encouraged me,” she added.

Manohar Bhatt, vice president (Marketing), Maruti Suzuki India, said, “For over 10 years now, we have been an ardent supporter of motorsport rallies. Autocross is now one of the best stepping stones for drivers who have a passion for rallying and racing. Competitions like these offer thrill, joy and adventure. The participants showed immense grit and determination and great sportsmanship. I would like to congratulate the winners and wish them all the luck in the future.”
