The incident comes close on the heels of a similar attack on a 25-year-old woman in Sunkadakatte.

According to preliminary investigation, the victim and Khan worked at an incense factory and knew each other for at least two years. Eventually, they got into a relationship.

Not content, Khan began badgering her to marry him and kept at it for six months, but the woman turned down his requests. Khan persisted and even approached her family members but it didn’t yield any results.

Unable to put up with Khan’s torture, the woman quit her job in the factory and began working in another factory for the past three months.

On Friday, Khan went to meet the woman around 9.30 am and carried half a bottle of diluted toilet cleaner with him. He walked along with her towards the Sarakki metro station from Iliyas Nagar. When the duo got into an argument, he threw toilet cleaner on her and fled.

With the woman screaming for help, bystanders rushed to her aid. She was immediately rushed to an eye care hospital, where she was given first aid and shifted to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital. Later, she was moved to the Burns Ward at Victoria hospital.

A senior police officer said the woman is out of risk, but has sustained some burns on her face, neck and shoulder.

The woman had complained of loss of vision in her right eye but after treatment the vision is back. “We are hoping she will recover completely with proper treatment,” another senior police officer said.

Khan is being currently being questioned about the source of the acid and about the attack.
