The Ashok Nagar police detained nearly 30 members of a Kannada organisation when they tried to blacken English signboards and banners at the MG Road-Brigade Road junction on Wednesday morning.

The activists said despite a government rule that 70% of the words on the signboards should be in Kannada, many shopkeepers had not implemented it. The protesters raised slogans and tried to blacken the signboards, but the police prevented them from doing so and detained them. The protesters had planned to blacken English signboards from MG Road up to Attibele. The police released the protesters later in the day.

Kannada activists of another organisation staged a protest in front of a private school in JP Nagar, which remained open on the Rajyotsava Day, which is a government holiday.

The protesters gathered near Image Public School and had an argument with the management for keeping the school open.

The protesters forced the management to declare a holiday and send the children home.
