Former Chief Justice of India, M N Venkatachalaiah, said not enough attention was being paid to academic research programmes in universities across India.
Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of a programme organised on the occasion of World Veterinary Day at the Karnataka Veterinary Council (KVC), Venkatachalaiah said: “Compared with the 20th century, there are many more research programmes and technological advancements taking place in the 21st century. We can expect more of it to happen in the next decade. While advanced research activities are being conducted in other countries, India is still up for the challenge.”
Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) Managing Director, Dr Premnath A S who was also present on the occasion, pointed out the shortage of veterinary doctors at KMF. “Presently, there are around 324 doctors, but we still have a shortage of 120 doctors.
“Currently, we are deploying doctors from outside the State, which is a huge challenge. We would benefit if short-term veterinary courses are provided by Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services to our staff.” He added that they have also sent a proposal to the State government for setting up cattlesheds.
Dr C Renukaprasad, vice chancellor of the Karnataka Veterinary Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar, said that there was a need to set up electric animal crematoriums and ensure reduction of animal sacrifice in the State.
