The city traffic police, tasked with the unenviable job of managing the vehicular flow under the KR Puram cable-stayed bridge, are caught in a different jam of sorts. The South Western Railway and the state government are yet to strike a deal on acquiring a piece of land that would help widen the side roads and smoothen traffic.
Sources say the railways are not ready to part with the land, although plans are afoot to get an old railway quarters building demolished. If this is accomplished, the BBMP and police could take up the widening job underneath the bridge.
But the traffic police also have another agency to contend with: The transport department. BMTC and KSRTC buses stop right at the upramp of the bridge, creating massive congestion on all approach roads. The incessant movement of commuters, the improper placing of a skywalk and the huge number of jay walkers have complicated matters.
For now, the traffic topbrass has no choice but to post more of their men at the spot. Rising vehicular traffic, particularly before and after long extended holidays, makes the place even more difficult to manage.
