'Ondu Bucketinalli Samudra’ (The Entire Sea in a Bucket) is one of the books set for release.

In a bid to introduce fresh themes into Kannada children’s literature, 14 picture books will be launched at an event this Sunday. Except for one title, the rest are translated works. They cover meaningful topics, ranging from grief and disability to cancer survival and friendship through sign language.

“Children are not immune to complex emotions, but we don’t give them the space or vocabulary to express themselves. Through these stories, we hope to start those conversations at home and in classrooms,” says Sreeja V N, founder of Bahuroopi Publications, which led the initiative.

The books have been carefully translated to retain humour, cultural nuances and emotional depth, and are illustrated by award-winning artists.

Many of these titles emerged from ‘Bimba Prateebimba’, a three-day residential workshop held in collaboration with Tata Trust’s Parag initiative. Fourteen aspiring writer-translators were trained, resulting in 11 books. Bahuroopi translated two others, and produced an original in English.

On July 6, 10 am, at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, Kumarakrupa Road. Entry free.
