The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) has finally come out with a complete list of unauthorised schools in the City.
On its website, it has listed as many as 1,286 private schools as illegal. Of these, 978 are in Bengaluru South and 488 are in Bengaluru North. Of the total number of schools, only around 50 are affiliated to other boards - CBSE, ICSE and International
boards.
There are around 6,500 schools in the City, out of which around 2,500 are private unaided schools.
When asked when the complete list of schools in the State would come out, Mohammed Mohsin, Commissioner, Department of Public Instruction said, “There are a number of legal issues such as location of the school, etc, that need to be sorted out before publishing the list. We are in the process of sorting such issues before we bring out the list for the entire State,” he said.
So far as action against the unauthorised schools in the City is concerned, Mohsin said that the schools would be getting 10 days to give a suitable reply to the department and action would be taken thereafter.
The issue of schools running illegal sections or without any authority surfaced when incidents of abuse and harassment were reported from various schools in the City in quick succession in the last five months. Following the rape of a minor child in Orchid International School, Jalahalli in October, the third such incident in four months, it was found that the school was running its pre-primary and primary sections without any authorisation. Soon after, it was found that other prestigious schools were also running illegally.
