The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has launched a mobile app that helps people get saplings free of charge for planting them in their homes and neighbourhoods. The civic body aims to plant at least 10 lakh saplings this monsoon.

Launched on Sunday, ‘BBMP Green’ can be downloaded on Google Play. You can place a request for up to 50 saplings by providing your name, mobile number, tree species, number of saplings you need, the place where you want to plant them and your ward number. A residents’ welfare association (RWA) can get up to 200 saplings.

Sixteen different varieties of saplings are available with the BBMP. An SMS will acknowledge the request and ask you to collect the saplings from the BBMP park in your ward. Once you get the saplings, you can upload pictures of their different levels of growth, BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad said.

Mayor G Padmavathi said that although measures had been taken in the last one decade for increasing the green cover in Bengaluru, it was unclear how many saplings had been planted and what was their current status.
