Niladri Kumar has been playing sitar since his childhood. He gave his first independent concert at Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Puducheri when he was just six-years-old.
He began his film career in late 1980s and was also part of the Masters of Percussion Tour alongside Zakir Hussain. He has been working with numerous music directors including A R Rehman, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Pritam. He was conferred with Sangeet Natak Academy’s Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, awarded to young musicians, in 2007.
He also won the MTV Emmie Award for best classical/ fusion instrument for his album If. Niladri Kumar has transformed sitar into guitar and thus created zitar. Sitar was modified to create rock guitar sound out of it.
Niladri Kumar reduced the number of strings on sitar from 20 to five. Then he added an electric pick-up inside the instrument, so that it would sound more like the guitar.
