Bengaluru: A 33-year-old man was arrested for attempting to run over police personnel conducting night checks, the police said on Sunday.
The suspect, identified as Mahadevaswamy M alias Ramachari, is a waste paper shop owner and a resident of KP Agrahara.
The police said the incident occurred on the intervening night of March 3 and 4 on West of Chord Road in Rajajinagar.
Police constable Karthik UK and head constable Dhareppa Tonne were conducting routine night inspections in the area, led by police sub-inspector Manjunatha NV.
Manjunatha, who lodged the complaint, stated that barricades had been installed and inspections were being carried out on suspicious vehicles.
Past midnight, Mahadevaswamy, who was unidentified at the time, drove his Tata Altroz rashly and attempted to run over the two constables who tried to stop him at the checkpoint.
The incident was caught on a nearby CCTV camera. The car came to a stop 200 metres ahead, prompting the two constables to pursue him on their department-issued two-wheeler.
When they asked him to step out of the vehicle, he allegedly made a sharp turn in an attempt to run them over, the police said. The car hit the two-wheeler, causing the officers to fall and sustain injuries, while the suspect fled the scene.
The Magadi Road police registered a case and later traced the suspect. He was booked under sections related to attempt to murder, voluntarily causing hurt, and assault or use of criminal force against a public servant. The police also impounded the Tata Altroz.
