A 43-year-old man was arrested by the Basaveshwara Nagar police for allegedly murdering his wife and harassing her for dowry, officials said on Monday.
The suspect, Lokesh Kumar Gehlot, 43, a resident of Mahaganapathinagar in western Bengaluru, murdered his wife, Namitha Sahi (43). Gehlot owned a photo studio in Cubbonpet, the police said.
According to the police, Gehlot had been quarrelling with Namitha over trivial issues for the past two weeks.
On April 25, around 6 pm, after returning home from work, he received a call from his brother-in-law. Namitha, the police said, asked who Gehlot was speaking with and told him to put the call on loudspeaker. This led to a quarrel between the couple. The argument soon turned heated, and Gehlot allegedly shoved Namitha to the ground and strangled her.
He was arrested shortly after. During questioning, it was revealed that before the murder, Gehlot had made Namitha withdraw Rs 60,000 from her savings to “improve his business and purchase a plot of land”. “He also harassed her for dowry,” a police investigator said.
Gehlot was booked for murder and dowry death, and remanded to judicial custody following a detailed interrogation.
