Markets in the City have turned into mounds of garbage over the last few days of festivals.

BBMP commissioner M Lakshminarayana said that since it was the festival season, the waste accumulation had gone up in the last few days. He said that 250 to 300 tonnes more than the normal amount of trash had accumulated due the Dasara and Bakrid festivals.

Mayor N Shanthakumari, Lakshminarayana and other senior officials, on Monday, conducted a surprise inspection of areas where garbage had piled up. The inspection was done in the wake of increasing complaints about ineffective waste disposal and also to monitor waste management. “Within two days, the garbage will be completely cleared from the City,” the commissioner said.

Shanthakumari directed the zonal officers to take steps to clear the litter. The Palike officials visited KR Market, Russell Market, RBANM Grounds near Commercial Street, Dasarahalli and other places. Shanthakumari instructed the BBMP engineers concerned to dispose the garbage accumulated at the KR Market and footpaths nearby within an hour.
