Bengaluru: A massive fire was reported on Tuesday morning at a godown storing oil and lubricant products on the outskirts of Bengaluru, police officials said. No casualties were reported.
The fire control room was alerted to the incident at 3.30 am, following which 11 fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the spot from stations in and around the Adkamaranahalli area near the Nelamangala RTO, where the godown is located.
Senior officers said the operation to douse the flames concluded by the afternoon and there were no casualties. They added that the godown measured 80 metres in length and 30 metres in width.
"Prima facie, it appears that an electric short circuit caused a spark inside the godown. Since oils and lubricants were stored there, a huge blaze and a massive plume of smoke engulfed the area in and around the godown. There was also a strong stench that lingered for a long time,” a police officer said.
"An investigation has been launched to ascertain the actual cause. The godown is owned by a person named Krishnappa,” he added.
Visuals flooded social media, showing massive plumes of smoke billowing from the godown.
What Shell has to say
In a statement issued on Tuesday, a Shell representative clarified that the fire had occurred at a third-party shared warehouse operated by Toll Logistics.
"This facility, which is not owned or operated by Shell, is used for the storage of lubricant products. We understand that there have been no casualties,” the statement said.
"The safety and well-being of our employees, partners, and the surrounding community remain our highest priority. We are working closely with Toll Logistics and local authorities to manage the incident and secure the area. A comprehensive assessment is in progress to determine the cause and extent of the fire, which is yet to be ascertained.”
