MCI nod for 3 new government medical colleges in K'taka

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has given its approval for establishing three new government medical colleges at Chamarajanagar, Madikeri and Karwar in the current academic year 2016-17.

Disclosing this to media persons here on Friday, Minister of State for Medical Education, Dr Sharanprakash Patil, said the MCI had also renewed its approval for the three government medical colleges started last year in Kalaburagi, Koppal and Gadag.

With this, the Siddaramaiah government has the credit of starting six new government medical colleges in the past two-and-a- -half-years. He said that with the approval of the three new colleges, the total number of government medical seats had gone up to 2,200 and that it was a big gift to meritorious students of the state. Each government medical college will have an intake of 150.

Patil said preparations were being made for starting government medical colleges at Yadgir, Bagalkot, Haveri, Tumakuru, Chitradurga and Chikkaballapur. After the launch of these colleges, the total number of government medical colleges in the state will go up to 22. In the colleges started recently, necessary infrastructure has been made available and teaching staff recruited, he said.
