City-based Trans-Disciplinary University-Foundation for Revitalization of Local Health Traditions (TDU-FRLHT) celebrated the Indian Medical Heritage Day on Tuesday.

The day coincides with the birthday of one of its patrons and the scion of erstwhile Mysuru kingdom, Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar. The varsity has been working to rejuvenate traditional and indigenous medical systems.

The TDU library services, established in memory of Wadiyar a few years ago, have been a repository of key documents and collections on Indian system of medicine, including the ancient manuscripts digitised and preserved in the form of catalogues.

The open day and heritage day on the TDU campus was inaugurated by Wadiyar’s wife Promodadevi Wadiyar.

Addressing researchers, faculty and other members of the TDU, Promodadevi recalled the contributions of her husband to traditional medicine. “He believed in Ayurveda and home remedies. Both the Ayurveda and astrology were his favourite subjects. I am happy that researchers have been carrying forward his thoughts through their scientific actions,” she added.

TDU Vice-Chancellor Prof Darshan Shankar said the varsity was constantly working towards translating the dream of building a healthy society into reality in various disciplines. The faculty members also unveiled a map of the upcoming kitchen — a blend of traditional and modern cooking methods — while stressing on holistic nutrition. Former MP, Madhu Yaskhi Goud, was among several notable figures present during the open day.
