These resilient monolithic GRP Vinylister-based manholes can withstand pressure at heavy traffic zones. Presently, they have been installed under Jayamahal Main Road and at the Urvashi Theatre junction.
T Venkataraju, engineer-in-chief, BWSSB, said they are still in the process of conducting research and development on the durability of new type of manholes. “On a trial basis, we have installed them in two of the busiest places in the City which experience maximum load of heavy traffic. We want to check if these monolithic manholes can withstand pressure from heavy trucks and then we will decide on further installations,” he said.
Venkataraju added that the traditional manholes built with bricks and sand get corroded very easily with rodents playing a role in damaging them causing the entire structure to collapse.
Depending on the durability, these new manholes will be installed on BHEL Road, Mysore Road etc, he added.
These manholes do not collapse or entertain rodents due to their tougher than mild steel nature of material. The lid of the manhole can also be raised each time the road level rises. In case of a crack or a visible damage, it can be rebuilt to its original strength within an hour by replacing the spare lids.
