“In the last three months his condition gradually deteriorated. He had been coming to the shop until then. He became slow, stopped eating and started losing his memory,” Sanjay said.

The shop first opened its doors in 1945. It was set up by Murthy’s father, KBK Rao, a lawyer. It was initially located in a garage on Museum Road and moved to its current location, off Brigade Road, in 1984 when Murthy took over the business.

Murthy gave up a career in aeronautical engineering to run the store, which is sought after for its rare and old books.

His last rites will be performed on Tuesday.
