Bangalore-based designer Yashaswini Naik believes in designing clothes for the masses. After a brief stint with the label of the Maharaja of Mysore, the young designer has started her own label. Now, she wants to see more youngsters wearing her clothes.

She admits that her experience as the head designer for the Maharaja’s label helped her a lot. Not only did it open up many avenues for her career-wise, but it also gave her the chance to learn about texture and colour from a historical sense.

“Working for the Maharaja taught me a lot. It was more like a history lesson. I learnt a lot about his lineage and style through the clothes we designed. His brand comprises of a lot of ethnic wear,” she says.

She adds that she’s always had a creative streak. “I’ve always wanted to play with colours and make clothes that are comfortable and liked by everyone. The whole idea behind my label is to offer designer wear at affordable prices. I am into mass production and design clothes for all age groups,” she explains. But while she’s very clear on this point, she adds that she isn’t critical of the designs of her peers. “My clothes are for everyone — I design them so that they can be worn to a party or to the mall. But that doesn’t mean I don’t like the clothes that other designers make. I admire their work and have my favourites too,” she says. While keeping her designs wearable, Yashaswini makes it a point to add a certain element of glamour to them.

Yashaswini’s sense of style has been appreciated for its bright colours and crisp cuts. “I’ve always experimented with cuts, styles and colours. My parents have supported me in every way possible and hence, I have been able to do what I like,” notes Yashaswini.
When it comes to the style quotient of the City, she’s all praises. “People here have an amazing sense of style. They can usually be spotted wearing classy and elegant clothes and don’t mismatch outfits. I feel the sense of style has improved to a great extent in Bangalore,” she states, adding, “I feel Bangalore has the capability to host more fashion shows, which will bring us face-to-face with the public.”
