Bengaluru: Almost a week after taking charge as BBMP Chief Commissioner, senior IAS officer M Maheshwar Rao inspected some of the city’s most poorly maintained footpaths in and around the Majestic area to get a first-hand understanding of the ground realities.

Generally, senior officers avoid taking this stretch as it is used as open urinals and considered 'beyond repair'.

Accompanied by engineers, Rao walked for about two hours, starting at 6.30 am, covering stretches such as Gubbi Thotadappa Road, Dhanvantari Road, Tank Bund Road, and others connected to the BMTC and KSRTC bus terminals, as well as the railway and metro stations.

Rao noted that many of the footpaths were unwalkable, primarily because passengers were using them as open urinals despite the presence of public toilets nearby.

During the inspection, he came across an abandoned concrete ring pipe on the footpath near the Sangolli Rayanna statue, dry logs and branches obstructing the same road, potholes, missing kerbs, footpath encroachments by street vendors, and an unauthorised construction near the Upparpet police station. He directed the engineers to clear these obstructions and ensure a seamless pedestrian path.
