To improve water quality of sewage-filled Bellandur lake and tubewells sunk in the vicinity, the Namma Bengaluru Foundation (NBF) on Wednesday proposed three steps to restore the 900-acre lake and sought a budgetary requirement of Rs 400 crore to implement the proposal in two to three years.
After submitting a 28-page document titled ‘Save Bellandur Action Plan’ to Bengaluru Development Minister K J George at a programme here, the Foundation laid down priorities - dewatering in a controlled way to prevent downstream flooding, clearing most of the contaminated water, allowing silt to naturally dry and excavating dried sludge and silt.
To facilitate construction of a dry-weather channel, the action plan underlined the need to gradually drain out water in a controlled manner by using thrust boring technology at two locations (away from the outfall weirs) and connect these outlets to the sluice channels downstream of the main bund in a regulated flow.
