Nityananda, who was taken to the government-run Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology last night, underwent a number of requisite tests, including ECO and ECG, after he was admitted, Hospital Director Dr C Manjunath told reporters. "We decided to discharge him as the treadmill test which he underwent in the morning, showed normal results. We wanted to monitor his condition and then discharge him," he said.

Nityananda has been in police custody since April 22, after he was arrested at Solan in Himachal Pradesh on April 21, ending his more than a month-long elusive run. His custody was extended by two days by a court at Ramanagaram, 40 km from here, on Monday.

The self-styled godman landed in a controversy last month after TV channels telecast purported video footage showing him in a compromising position with a Tamil actress. Tamil Nadu police had registered cases for various crimes, including rape, against Nityananda before transferring them to Karnataka. Prior to his arrest, Nityananda had announced that he would lead a life of "spiritual seclusion" and quit as head of his ashram.
