Desi Beats, which was organised by Cosmos, was held recently at the JSS Auditorium. The concert, which was conducted during the long weekend, saw a packed auditorium. With there being no bar on genre, the audience got a taste of old, new and original compositions.
The performers included Arun Kumar on the drums, Shabbir Ahmed and Umesh V on the keyboard, Celestin Gerald and Chandrashekar on percussion, Srinivas Achar and Caleb Alexander on the guitar, Madhusudana on the tabla, Sandeep Vashista on the flute as well as singers Radhakrishna and Seema Raiker.
“It’s good to see a varied age group in the audience, especially since I will be singing songs from different genres. The best thing about today is the diverse audience. I hope people relish the experience,” said Varijashree, who sang contemporary songs and played the flute.
“I am also looking forward to singing some original compositions,” added the artiste, who has recently completed a degree in Carnatic music from Mysore University.
Another performer, Arun Kumar, played retro film hits along with a few other artistes. He said that it is usually a full house when retro music is playing. “We are here with only one intention, which is that people should appreciate and enjoy what we present. Especially when it comes to retro music, I have noticed that people eagerly look forward to it,” he said.
The evening had a mix of classical, fusion, lounge and film songs.
Some of the popular tunes performed were Ye Jawani Yeh Deewani , Omme Ninanu, Nee Bandu Nintaage, Noorondu Nenapu; a medley of songs by Asha Bhosle which included Yeh Mera Dil, Pyar Karne Wale, Dum Maro Dum and Piya Tu Ab To Aja along with devotional songs.
Performer Praveen D Rao explained, “There is a notion that classical music is boring. But there are a lot of people who are interested in it. Especially with the younger generation, it depends on the kinds of classical performances that parents take their children to. If they are boring, then kids grow up with that idea.”
“It was a treat to listen to retro songs. I found the choice interesting. An event like this during a long weekend is a good idea, especially since many of those interested in music can come. I found it really relaxing,” said Sudha, a member of the audience. Pratiksha, who came along with her friends, added that she was looking forward to some light music.
“I have heard the performers previously, which is the reason I made it a point to come. I am eager to listen to the variety they will be offering,” she said.
The special guests at the show were veteran film-maker KSL Swamy and former speaker of the Legislative Assembly Ramesh Kumar.
