The civic body plans to spend Rs 2.88 crore annually to feed chicken rice to 4,000 out of the estimated 2.7 lakh strays in the city.

The food will be provided at designated locations in wards that face challenges in capturing dogs or reducing their population, it said.

According to Suralkar Vikas Kishore, BBMP Special Commissioner (Animal Husbandry), 100 feeding spots in each zone will provide food daily for 365 days to 500 dogs.

The daily cost per dog will be Rs 19 (excluding taxes). This includes Rs 8 for daily transportation, food supply and site sanitation, and Rs 11 for the food. Kishore also explained how the programme would help capture fearful or aggressive dogs.

“Lack of access to food drives dogs to form packs, increasing incidents of dog bites,” he said.

The initiative is being implemented to control dog population and had become a legal necessity under the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023, he added.
