Chitrangada Singh Randhawa is the latest actor to fall to the lure of item numbers. She has grooved to the song Kaafirana in the movie ‘Joker.’
The stunning beauty finds nothing wrong in doing item songs but wonders why the term has been misinterpreted, given so many twists and turns and turned into something derogatory.
“There were so many actresses like Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi who have done special songs but it was never looked down upon those days. I wanted to try out an item song and didn’t think twice before I agreed to do it. I don’t know why people attach so much importance to item songs,” she wonders.
Metrolife caught up with the actress, who was in the City recently, and got her talking about her likes and dislikes. Well into her 30s, Chitrangada doesn’t look anything like her age. “I work out a lot. It’s a disciplined and committed routine that has kept me going,” she avers.
Ask her how she rates herself in Desi Boyz and she thinks she could have done better. “Desi Boyz is my beginning in commercial cinema. There are a couple of shots where my performance could have been improved. “Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed working for the film,” she says.
Whether commercial or art cinema, Chitrangada is passionate about reading and getting to know more about the character and the background of the film. She is currently shooting with Arjun Rampal for a love story which has sexual harassment in a corporate setup as the backdrop.
Chitrangada had delved into every minute detail of the film. This research, she says, has helped her understand the character better. She also interacted with HR heads in several IT companies to understand what happens when cases of sexual harassment are brought to light.
She is just as confident and firm about doing good cinema as she is about doing an item song. “As an actor, you have to stick your finger into every role. It’s always better to get a feel of all kinds of characters,” she observes. She says she would like to do a period film or even a thriller someday. Although Chitrangada declined an offer to act in Vishwaroopam with Kamal Hassan due to lack of dates, she said she would like to work with Tamil actors Vijay and Suriya. “They are all such good actors and I’ve watched their films and am keen to work with them someday,” she says.
Films apart, Chitrangada gets into a different mood when she talks about her experience of playing a santa on ‘Superstar Santa’. Dubbing it as an interesting show, Chitrangada says that she was given the case of a brother and sister who weren’t talking to each other for a couple of years, “I was supposed to get them back together. Listening to their problems and resolving a sensitive issue was pretty insightful. But I learnt a lot at the end of it,” she wraps up.
