Bengalureans can now gather information about their neighbourhood parks and lakes through the Park Monitoring System and the Lake Monitoring System — dashboards created by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). They were conceptualised by Preeti Gehlot, special commissioner, BBMP.
“We have leveraged technology to make the process of monitoring parks and lakes more transparent. This way it is easier to follow up with officials too. As it is linked with Sahaaya (BBMP’s application for registering grievances), people can complain if they find that the information is wrong or if the park or lake is poorly maintained,” says Preeti.
Though they were launched in March 2024, they were upgraded in March 2025, said Chandrashekar M R, deputy director, horticulture, BBMP.
The Park Monitoring System lists essential details about the 1,236 parks that are managed by the BBMP.
On the dashboard, one can find the number of parks inspected by the BBMP on a given day, week, or month. The numbers are listed zone wise. On Thursday for instance, the number of parks inspected in the Bommanahalli zone was 7 out of 119. In the East zone, of the 269 BBMP parks, 26 had been inspected. A bar graph also displays the percentage of parks inspected zone wise.
Further down the page, one can access information about the infrastructure each park boasts. Clicking on the park’s name will redirect users to another page listing all the features.
According to the site, the RTO Office Park in Bommanahalli has benches, lawns, a gym, pathways, play area, security and fencing. It covers an area of 1 acre. BTM Triangular Park, on the other hand, has only ‘security’ listed under facilities, and ‘lawn’ and ‘pathway’ under infrastructure.
“If I want to go for a walk in an unfamiliar neighbourhood, I can open the page and locate the closest park, and even see what kind of infrastructure and facilities it has,” says Srinivas Alavilli, a civic activist.
Similarly, the Lake Monitoring System shows the number of lakes inspected in each zone and the features of the lake (security, fencing, bund, etc). A total of 183 lakes in Bengaluru come under the care of the BBMP. Puttenahalli Lake has multiple features like sedimentary ponds, bund, waterbody fencing, turfing, diversion drain, and gazebo.
Citizens can also feed in information about the birds they spotted at a particular lake under the ‘Birds of Namma Ooru’ tab.
