A 24-year-old youth, who attempted to rob a homemaker of her gold chain, was caught by locals at Doddanna Layout, Byadarahalli, off Magadi Road, on the outskirts of the City on Thursday and was thrashed black and blue.

Later, he was handed over to the jurisdictional Tavarekere police.

“The suspect has been identified as Hari Om. He is a native of Odisha and seems to be an active member of Bawariya gang, a gang notorious for chain-snatching. Hari Om and (his accomplice) Neethu had come to Doddanna Layout to rob a woman. Neethu managed to escape and the police are searching for him,” a senior police officer said.

During interrogation, Hari Om claimed that he was approached by Neethu for assistance in chain-snatching. Hari Om decided to help him as Neethu promised him to pay huge sums for the assistance, the police said.

Neethu and Hari Om reached Doddanna Layout around 2 pm and spotted Panchali, a homemaker, standing in front of her house, alone. Neethu parked the bike some metres away from Panchali’s house, while Hari Om got down and went towards her house. He laid his hands on her neck and attempted to snatch the chain, but she raised an alarm. Some locals gathered there and chased him. Meanwhile, Neethu spotted the residents and fled from the spot, the police added.

The locals caught Hari Om and thrashed him black and blue. On being alerted, the police rushed to the spot and arrested him.
