Organs of brain-dead Mangaluru man give life to 3

A 24-year-old brain-dead man’s kidneys were harvested and transplanted into two people here on Tuesday. His liver was flown to Bengaluru and transplanted into a patient.

Hardik Raj, a networking engineer from Pachanady, Mangaluru, had sustained grievous injuries after falling from a motorcycle on August 6. He was brought to AJ Hospital and Research Centre and declared brain-dead on August 8.

A team of doctors spoke to his father Radhakrishna and mother Usha and counselled them to donate their son’s organs. They consented.

A team of specialists from Zonal Co-ordination Committee of Karnataka for Transplantation and doctors harvested the liver and kidneys. One kidney was transplanted into a patient at AJ Hospital while the other was sent to Yenepoya Hospital. The liver was flown to Bengaluru around 11 pm.
