The Karnataka High Court on Thursday directed the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to set up segregation units at the ward level and establish automatic solid waste management units within a week.

The Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen and Justice B V Nagarathna directed the BBMP on a public interest litigation filed by G R Mohan, who blamed the BBMP for its inability to remove garbage from the City. He said poor garbage disposal  has caused severe health hazard and public nuisance.

The Bench directed the Palike to start setting up automatic solid waste management units and use landfills only for temporary period for garbage disposal. The court also empowered the Palike to penalise those who do not segregate garbage at source. It instructed the Palike to submit the compliance report by October 9.
