The 29-year-old heiress and her friends were held at a police station in the St Croix area of Port Elizabeth on Friday after the police accused the group of smoking pot. But Hilton was later released without charge and has said the authorities were “super nice and friendly” throughout the incident, Contactmusic reported. The great-granddaughter of Hilton hotels founder Conrad Hilton was taken into custody after the Brazil-Netherlands World Cup quarter-final match in the South African coastal city.

Her representative issued a statement, branding the incident a “complete misunderstanding”, adding that another person in the group was the culprit and that authorities have “apologised for wrongfully accusing her”.

Hilton seems to have taken the case lightly, thanking fans for their support and insisting she loves South Africa. “Hey guys, there’s a lot of crazy rumours going around. Just want you all to know the truth. Everything is completely fine. I was not charged or arrested, cause (sic) I didn’t do anything. I was assisting the police with the investigation and answering their questions. Everyone was super nice and friendly to me,” she wrote on her Twitter page.

“I love South Africa! Such an amazing place, especially during the World Cup! Hope that clears everything up. Love you guys, thanks for your concern,” she added.

Hilton made headlines in June 2007, when she spent three weeks in a Los Angeles jail for violating her probation in an earlier reckless driving charge. Hilton, who has worked as a model, singer, actress, fashion designer and reality TV star, has since adopted a lower public profile.
