Pet lovers in the city are coming together to demand better treatment for stray dogs through a social media campaign #NoMoreACBFailure.
The campaign comes in the wake of the death of a stray dog, Jhansi, earlier this week. The dog was being treated at an Animal Birth Control (ABC) unit in Bommanahalli zone. Though it was later shifted to a private veterinary hospital for further treatment, Jhansi is said to have succumbed to infection of intestines.
Yangchen Dolkar, a pet lover and a resident of Vasanthpura, is behind the social media campaigns #NoMoreACBFailure and #TreatMyStreetizenRightBBMP.
“Street dogs are an ignored lot. They have to be given the right treatment at ABC centres and should not be let out just a day after treatment. They need at least five to six months of treatment until they completely recover and these centres do not keep the injured dogs until then,” said Dolkar.
Another pet lover and animal activist Nevina Kamath said, “The ABC centres in the city run by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) must be shut down as some of them are being run illegally. . Their treatment techniques are also faulty.”
Asked if action will be taken against the veterinary officer for not treating Jhansi properly, Dr G Anand, joint director, Animal Husbandry, BBMP, said, “It is not the doctor’s fault that the dog died. So we are not taking any action.”
