The first phase will begin on August 17 for general public, while the second phase of appointment-based enrolment for institutions and corporate houses will be from August 30.

However, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), starting this Thursday, has opened counters for registration for mediapersons and their family members at the Press Club. For the general public, centres will be opened across the City August 17 onwards.

Speaking to media, the Principal Secretary to the Department of IT/BT and e-Governance M N Vidyashankar said: “Registration centres will be opened at community halls, BangaloreOne Centres, select educational institutions and other welfare organisations.”

Considering the City’s large population, the Authority had to schedule the registration process in two phases, he said.

To facilitate those who work in shifts and during day-night, centres will be opened at select BangaloreOne Centres for enrolment between 10 pm and 6 am, he added.

The day centres will work from 8 am to 8 pm in the Palike’s nine Samudaya Bhavans. In total there will be 1,100 stations at different centres in the City, including night centres.

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has also made all the logistical arrangements for the scheme. After a meeting with the nodal officers, Palike Commissioner Siddaiah said all the citizens of Bangalore will be given UID numbers within nine months.

UIDAI (Karnataka) Deputy Director General Ashok M R Dalwai said: “We have completed 95 per cent of enrolment in Mysore and Tumkur districts and a total of 2.5 crore UID numbers were given across the country.”

With adequate support from the State governments, the Authority will be able to achieve the target of 600 million numbers by 2014, he added.

In this fiscal, only Rs 1,470 crore has been approved for the UIDAI, as against the projected demand of Rs 3,373 crore in the Budget estimate for 2011-12.
