Bengaluru: A police officer fired at a notorious history-sheeter after he allegedly attacked a constable while trying to evade arrest, officials said on Thursday.
The incident occurred near Bandapura village under the Surya City police station limits on Bengaluru’s southern outskirts. The suspect is Sunil, who is wanted in over eight criminal cases, including murder and attempted murder, officials said.
“Sunil collected hafta (protection money) for another history-sheeter named Manu, who operates in the Anekal area,” a senior police officer told DH.
According to the police, based on credible inputs about Sunil’s whereabouts, a team from the Attibele police station led by the inspector reached Bandapura on Thursday morning.
“The police officers asked the suspect to surrender but he didn’t. He instead attacked police constable Vinay in a bid to escape. Vinay sustained some injuries. This led to the Attibele police inspector opening fire in self-defence after the suspect failed to heed any warning,” the officer quoted above said.
Sunil sustained minor injuries to his leg and was taken to a hospital. “He is recovering and we have initiated the necessary legal action,” the officer added.
Last week, another history-sheeter, Lokesh B, was shot in the leg by an officer from the Jigani police station. Lokesh, who faced cases of murder and extortion, had attacked a police constable, leading to the shot being fired, police officers had said.
