Bengaluru: Bengaluru city police have roped in police marshals, who are volunteers, to raise awareness on issues like drug abuse and cybercrime. Police also used them for their anti-smoking campaign on May 31 on the occasion of World No-Tobacco Day.
“The Bengaluru City Police, in collaboration with Aarohan Foundation, has introduced the concept of ‘Police Marshals’ to address critical social issues like drug abuse and cybercrime,” the city police said in a statement.
“This initiative involves selecting suitable college students who are trained and empowered to spread awareness on these topics. By educating students on the ill-effects of drugs and the importance of cyber safety, these police marshals act as ambassadors, further educating their peers and the general public through various activities,” it added.
According to the statement, currently there are over 9,000 police marshals across 94 colleges in Bengaluru.
“Outstanding Police Marshals are offered specialised training, such as rifle training and self-defence programs, to enhance their skills. Police Marshals are strictly trained to focus on creating awareness and do not engage in moral policing. They often provide valuable information to authorities regarding drug sales, illegal liquor shops, and other societal issues. The core emphasis is on moulding them into responsible citizens,” the statement said.
