The incident occurred near the Mayo Hall Junction around 6.45 pm.

The police complaint stated that Haneez PK, 47, was driving a car registered with Chemmanur Jewellers (KA 03 NT 6543) towards Kadugodi from the Cauvery Emporium side. As the signal turned red, he stopped and waited to continue his journey.

At this point, a speeding goods truck (KL 31 0689) coming down the same road rammed into the back of Haneez’s car, pushing it into another stationary car in front.

The goods truck did not stop there. It went on to crash into a motorcycle (KA 05 KW 5888) in front. Its occupants, 40-year-old Vijaykumar and 36-year-old Anjali, were thrown onto the road. The police said that the truck, which went on to crash into two more vehicles, ran over Anjali, causing severe head and facial injuries. Vijaykumar suffered injuries to his right arm and leg.

Anjali, who was rushed to hospital, was pronounced dead on arrival. Vijaykumar is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

The truck came to a halt only after crashing into the signal pole at the junction. The front portion of the truck was crushed, while Haneez’s car was mangled at both ends, the police said.

The Ashoknagar traffic police have filed a case against the goods truck driver, who fled the scene, and have launched an investigation to trace him.

An FIR has been registered under sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 125 (A) (endangering life or personal safety of others), and 106 (1) (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and sections 124 (A and B) (duty of driver in case of accident and injury to a person) and 187 (punishment for offences relating to accidents) of the Motor Vehicles Act.
