This apartment could give a lesson or two to other residential complexes on to how to maintain landscape through effective waste management.

It’s a daily routine for housekeeping ladies of Sobha Ruby and Ruby Platinum apartments, nestled together at Nagasandra, to collect segregated waste from around 300 apartment units and put it into organic waste converter.

The machine installed in 2011 churns around 35 kg of wet waste into manure daily, used for beautifying the landscape comprising more than 600 plants and trees. Apartment members have been following waste segregation rule even before its implementation from October 1, 2012.

“The amount of waste generated from the apartment is close to around 40 kg to 45 kg. All residents are instructed about segregation of waste. Besides keeping the surrounding clean, the manure generated from organic waste converter helps in maintaining the landscape,” said Kavitha Singh, a resident.

The organic waste converter coverts the wet waste into fine powder when mixed with small amount of saw dust. The powder is later left to processing for about 20 to 25 days in an aerated chamber fitted with water sprinklers. The processed manure is used for gardening purposes. It is stored in gunny bags inside the chamber and used when needed.

“The builder provided the machine to carry out basic segregation. Occupants started coming into the apartment from 2011. But, it is only since last year, the machine is getting used to optimum use due to large number of residents,” said Subhash Shetty.
The dry waste, collected by housekeeping workers in seperate bags, is given to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) thrice a week.

There are around 20 housekeeping ladies trained to use the organic waste converter machine.

The residents are planning to join hands with private solid waste management agencies to make the optimum use of dry waste.

Also, on the cards, is to sell the manure at a low cost to apartment residents and those needing it.
