Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Rural police opened fire on a rowdy-sheeter who allegedly attacked an officer while trying to evade arrest in connection with a murder case.

Sarjapur police inspector Naveen Kumar shot Sreenivas alias Gubbacchi Seena in the leg after he assaulted a constable and attempted to flee, a senior police officer told DH. Sreenivas is out of danger and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

The incident occurred near a bakery in Sarjapur in the early hours of Tuesday.

Superintendent of Police (Bengaluru Rural) CK Baba stated that the suspect tried to attack officers with a sharp weapon in an attempt to escape. "Our inspector initially fired a warning shot in the air, but when the suspect still attempted to flee, the inspector was forced to shoot him," Baba told DH.

Sreenivas has a history of violent crimes, with two previous murder cases against him. He is listed as a rowdy-sheeter at the Vijayanagar police station.

The police suspect he played a key role in the murder of former rowdy-sheeter Venkatesh near Santhe Beedi, Sarjapur, last week. Venkatesh was attacked by two bike-borne assailants wielding billhook machetes while speaking on the phone near his Dommasandra residence around 9.30 pm, just 50 meters from his house.

The police traced Sreenivas and moved to arrest him when he resisted, leading to the shooting.
