A history-sheeter wanted for murder was shot at when he allegedly tried to evade arrest in western Bengaluru, police said.

Syed Waseem, 34, is believed to be the key player in the gang that murdered Syed Zabihullah at Hosa Guddadahalli on December 8.

The jurisdictional Byatarayanapura police had arrested other members of the gang, Mustafa, Manjunath, Kaleemullah, Shabbir and Irfan, on December 14 and were hunting for him.

Police got a tip-off that he would be coming to Jnanabharathi near Vishweshwaraiah Layout. They intercepted him at an isolated place near Dodda Basti in the early hours of Tuesday. But he started running and attacked police constable Harish Kumar. The Byatarayanapura police inspector, Virendra Prasad, asked him to surrender himself but he didn't pay heed. The inspector then shot him in the left leg. Both the suspect and the constable were later taken to hospital for treatment.

Police said Waseem had a history sheet (eight criminal cases) at the JJ Nagar police station and were waiting for his recovery to question him.
